LIVING LIGHTS ON!
OVERCOMING BURNOUT
Feeling fatigued? Dragging through your day? You are most likely experiencing burnout and are drained of your life force – “ki” or “chi” energy - the kind that gets you up and moving in the morning. Are you following an old life script you wrote that is no longer keeping you bright, alive, and energetic? Here are some tips to help you overcome burnout and get your energy back.
- Take a conscious time out. This can be anything as short as getting away from the office for a long lunch, to something longer like going away for the weekend or taking a week off. Taking a break helps interrupt patterns, and allows for time to look at the overall, big picture of your life. It is easy to get stuck in certain ways of doing things, such as “I’ve always done it that way.” Make note of any overall repeating patterns that are no longer energizing you.
- Notice what drains you. While on your time out, take note of the energy drains that are obvious. When you return from your break, pay attention to less obvious energy drains you as you go through your day.
- Notice what energizes you. Most importantly, look at the big picture, and make note of what actions create energy and make you feel alive.
- Make a “stop doing” list. This is when all of the “shoulds” come into the picture. Anytime that you find yourself using that language - “I should,” or “I’m obligated,” or “I said I would, but I am too exhausted to really be present,” – you are engaging a pattern that has the possibility of draining you. It is like living your life through the archetype of a martyr (“I will die for others by exhausting myself”) or a victim (“I’m not in control of my own life choices, circumstances are”). It is the fine art of learning when to say “NO.”
- Make a “do more” list. This is when you have to give yourself permission to live your life more fully. Even if the action steps seem small, the shift will produce profound change as you become more alive and energized. You will be living your life through the archetype of the visionary (“I can see ahead and plan for my own success”) and the liberator (“I can free myself from old, entrenched beliefs and attitudes”). It is the fine art of learning when to say “YES.”
- Begin an action plan to delegate and do more of what you love and less of what drains you. Even making one change, like getting a housekeeper once a month or sending your laundry out or making a weekly date night, will create meaningful change. Moving from complaint to action in your own life is very powerful. Engage the rebel archetype (“I can be innovative and create change”) Most people just complain about being burned out. They’ll say “Oh, I’m so exhausted!” that is a statement that creates inertia and perpetuates being stuck and burned out. Remember, moving from complaint to energized action has flow and possibility.
